Square Makes - Knitted Hat
Already have a scarf? How about making an easy hat to go with it? This is a knitted garter stitch hat made from 1 rectangle and uses sewing to give it shape.
The sizes below all use double knit (DK) yarn. You can either use 4mm or 4.5mm needles - I have used both in the past and prefer 4.5mm as it gives the hat a little extra stretch.
So, pick the DK yarn you want to use and get ready to cast on!
Preemie - cast on 30 stitches and knit for 94 rows
0-6 months - cast on 34 stitches and knit for 104 rows
Child (approx. 5-7 years) - cast on 51 stitches and knit for 148 rows
Adult small - cast on 55 stitches and knit for 160 rows
Adult medium - cast on 56 stitches and knit for 168 rows
Adult large - cast on 58 stitches and knit for 176 rows
Once you have cast off, leave a nice long tail for sewing. Next, you are going to sew up the shorter sides to make a tube - the longer sides make the hat itself.
Now you have a tube - you are going to cinch one end of it, loosely sewing the top of the tube together. Once this is done, you should be able to pull the yarn tight and it will gather the top together to make the top of the hat. Make sure you tie this off securely.
You should now have a hat - you can fold over the bottom edge (as shown in the photo below). You can add a pom pom to the top as well.
