Square Makes - Wrist Warmers

So, now you have your scarf and maybe even a hat, what about completing the collection with a pair of knitted wrist warmers?  OK, so I can't make gloves or mittens yet but these wrist warmers act like finger-less gloves and are easy enough to make up.  You just need to know a few techniques to begin with.

You will need to know how to Rib Stitch and how to Stockinette Stitch.

You do not need 2 balls of wool to do this - I have made mine this way to show the difference in the cuff.  The sizing can be as fluid as you need it to be in terms of the length - I have worked out anything from 5 inches right up to 7.5 inches will work fine depending on the size you require.  But you will need the following:

4.5mm needles
DK yarn
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Tape measure
Row counter (optional - I find this the easiest way to keep track of stockinette)

There are 5 sizes in total - so cast on 26 (XS), 32 (S), 36 (M), 42 (L) or 46 (XL) - the size shown in my photos is medium and is 5.5 inches in length.

Once you have cast on, you need to work Rib Stitch for 1 inch (shown in photo).

Once you have reached 1 inch - you need to switch to stockinette stitch - this is where I use the row counter to keep track on whether I'm on a knit row or a purl row.

Next, when you have reached the desired length, cast off and leave a long tail for sewing up.  This one was 30 rows which measures about 5.5 inches.  You will then have a rectangle like below.

The next step is to fold the piece in half with the wrong side facing you so you can use the long tail to sew the side up.  This part is up to you but you can either sew it up completely so it's like a tube or leave a thumb hole - I have left a thumb hole which I have shown in the photo.

Once you have sewn up the edge, sew in the ends.  Then turn the wrist warmer the right way around.  And there you go!  You may want to do another one too, you know...for another hand.

I made a bunch of these last year as Christmas presents and even made some for myself so I can attest to how useful they are.
