Square Makes - Phone Bag
This is a very easy to make bag whether you are a knitter or crocheter so is suitable for beginners. The formula for making this can be applied to any size in this style of bag that you want to make.
For this example, I have crocheted mine with DK wool and a 4mm hook. The measurements given below will allow enough space for a phone within a leather wrap around cover on to fit inside.
This bag is made from 3 parts as shown below and requires some sewing - that's it!
The front panel is the smaller panel and the larger panel makes the back panel as well as the flap. The strap is the other part to this.
Crochet version
Front panel - Create a chain until it measures 4 inches then double crochet until it measures 7 inches in length.
Back panel - Create a chain until it measures 4 inches then double crochet until it measures 10 inches in length. In my example, I have added a button hole which is done by chain stitching in the middle of the row to create a gap then continuing with double crochet.
Strap - Mine was made by single crochet or slip stitches. I made the foundation chain 48 inches long. You can however make the strap whichever you like or add on a ready made strap and D rings to hold it in place.
Next, you are going to sew up the sides and bottom then turn it inside out so the rough stitching is on the inside. Add the strap to the top corners of the bag by sewing in with plenty of stitches so its firmly in place.
As I made a button hole on the flap, I then added a button so the bag can be closed.
Knitted version
Measurements for double knit yarn and 4mm needles.
Front panel - cast on 24 stitches, knit in whichever style you prefer until it measures 7 inches in length. Cast off.
Back panel - cast on 24 stitches, knit in the same style as the front panel until it measures 10 inches in length. You can also add a button hole if you prefer. Cast off.
Strap - You can make the strap any way you like but from my experience a strap made from standard garter stitch will stretch a lot.
Next, you are going to sew up the sides and bottom then turn it inside out so the rough stitching is on the inside. Add the strap to the top corners of the bag by sewing in with plenty of stitches so its firmly in place.
If you made a button hole, add a button to the front panel of the bag to complete.
This is the basis for making any size of bag in this style - you can make it wider, longer, with flap or without, add a magnetic fastener or buttons or anything else to fasten it closed. Have fun with making it how you like.
