Knit & Crochet Scrunchies
Who doesn't love a quick make that's actually useful? I decided to combine both knitting and crochet on one post for these scrunchies. They are really easy to make and are a great way of using up any left over yarn you have.
Firstly - you need some strong hair bands, any will do but strong ones are a must. If the band was to snap you would end up either unpicking your work or getting rid of it completely.
Secondly - I used double knit yarn for both knitted and crochet versions. You can use any size needles/hook/yarn you like but my examples are with DK.
I made these for my daughter for school and they have to be grey in line with the uniform policy.
KNIT VERSIONS
Garter Stitch version
Now, I did find an issue when I was making this up so feel free to increase the amount you cast on if you think its not 'scrunchy' enough.
Using DK yarn and 4mm needles
Cast on 60
Garter stitch for 19 rows
Cast off (20 rows in total)
This should measure approximately 29cm x 5cm
Sew the narrow ends together to make a tube
Place the hair band around the middle of the tube you have just made - as in the photo.
Now, you need to sew the edges together to 'seal' the tube around the hair band. Once this is done, sew in any loose ends.
Stockinette version
Using DK yarn and 4mm needles
Cast on 70
Stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for 16 rows
Cast off (17 rows in total)
This should measure approximately 34cm x 6cm
Sew the narrow ends together to make a tube
As above, place the hair band around the middle of the tube and sew around the edge to 'seal' the hair band into the tube. Sew in any loose ends.
Once you get a feel for the sizing, you can use any weight yarn that you like!
CROCHET VERSIONS
The beauty of the crochet scrunchies is that you can use any stitch you like but I'm going to give you examples for half treble stitch and treble stitch which you can see in the photo.
To start both versions:

Join together with a slip stitch
Chain 3 again and add 2 treble stitches into each stitch all the way around
Join together with slip stitch and tie/secure off
Sew in any loose ends
Half treble crochet version
Chain 2 and add 2 half treble stitches into each stitch all the way around
Join together with a slip stitch
Chain 2 again and add 2 half treble stitches into each stitch all the way around
Join together with slip stitch and tie/secure off
