Granny Square Cardigan

Do you know how to make granny squares but are not sure of what to do with them other than a blanket?  With a little bit of planning, you can make a cardigan!

I'm not going to give you step by step instructions as these are widely available on the inter-web however I am going to give you some pointers should you wish to sew your granny squares into something different.

Firstly - you need a LOT of yarn.  I worked out that you need approximately 600g of DK yarn.  You will need more if you wish for the sleeves to be longer or for it to be larger in general (my version is 3/4 length sleeves).

I used a 5mm hook for a looser stitch and I worked on the idea that each square would have 5 rounds/rows - or so it measures approximately 14cm across.

So, roughly how many granny squares are we talking? At least 50.  16 for the front panels (8 & 8), 16 for the back panel and 18 for the sleeves (9 & 9).

The beauty of this design is that you can use any colour or as many/little colours as you want, it's easy to change the size (just add more squares) and is easy to make.  What more could you ask for when making a garment?

This cardigan is suitable for most sizes - I'm a UK size 20 and it fits me well, however it wouldn't look out of shape on a smaller size as 'oversize' is trendy.  Like I said the sleeves are 3/4 length on me but you can add or remove squares to suit.
