Knitted Coasters and Candle Jar Cover

For Christmas this year (2025), I've gone back to making very basic items.  I've made a lot for my family over the years and I was really struggling for ideas on what to do.

Back to basics at it's finest = knitted coasters (or mug rugs!)

To make these coasters, I wanted them to be sturdy so I used 2 x Double Knit yarn together with 8mm needles and chose to make them using garter stitch so the edges would be neat.  I also chose just a simple square again to keep the edges neat.

In addition to knitted and crochet items, this year my husband bought me a candle making set with lots of lovely scents.  So, together with the coasters (as they probably look a bit lame as a gift on their own) I've made a candle with a knitted jar cover

This is a little more complicated than the coasters and can easily be adjusted to any size but this is what I did:

Measure the width of the jar and the height you want the cover to be

This stitch is a variation of garter rib stitch which you need to cast on in multiples of 8 stitches plus an extra 4 stitches.

Row 1: Knit 4, *purl 4, knit 4, repeat from * to end
Row 2: Purl
Repeat rows 1 and 2 to form pattern
Cast off

Whilst it's easy, it gives a different yet effective pattern to the project - see for yourself.
