Square Makes - Easy Crochet Hat
Using the principles for the easy square make knitted hat, I've finally created the crochet version. This, however, is much more versatile. You can use any stitch, any weight yarn with relevant hook and customise as you see fit.
This is made from one simple rectangle using measurements. That's it. The trick to the shaping is in the sewing.
So, if you are just starting out with crochet this is a great project to expand your skills. If you are a pro at crochet then I'm sure you'll have fun making this too.
To make this, you will need:
Yarn - any weight will do, but my example is in DK
Crochet hook - suitable for the weight of the yarn, so I used a 4mm hook
Scissors
Tape measure
Tension ring (optional)
My hat is made as an adult medium size but below is a list of all sizes to make.
Firstly, you need to make a chain. Measure this chain as it hangs from the hook loosely. I have also included the measurements for the chain when it is stretched from the hook (this may only be for DK as this is what I used so please keep this in mind).
Preemie - Chain for 8 inches (10 inches when stretched)
0-6 months - Chain for 9.5 inches (11 inches when stretched)
6-12 months - Chain for 10.5 inches (12 inches when stretched)
12-18 months - Chain for 12.5 inches (14 inches when stretched)
Child Small - Chain for 13.5 inches (15.5 inches when stretched)
Child Medium - Chain for 14 inches (16 inches when stretched)
Child Large - Chain for 14.5 inches (17 inches when stretched)
Adult Small - Chain for 15.5 inches (18.5 inches when stretched)
Adult Medium - Chain for 16 inches (19 inches when stretched)
Adult Large - Chain for 16.5 inches (20 inches when stretched)
From this chain, you can use any technique you like. I used double crochet (UK), front loop only.
So, keep going with a rectangle until you reach the relevant length below:
Preemie - 9.25 inches
0-6 months - 10.25 inches
6-12 months - 11 inches
12-18 months - 12.25 inches
Child Small - 13 inches
Child Medium - 13.75 inches
Child Large - 14.75 inches
Adult Small - 16 inches
Adult Medium - 16.75 inches
Adult Large - 17.5 inches
Fasten off once you reach the desired length leaving a long tail.
Next, take your tapestry needle and sew the rectangle shorter sides into a tube.
Then, either with the same tail or a fresh piece of yarn, you are going to cinch the top of the tube together so it ruffles closed (pull this tight). See photo.
Make sure that you fasten this off securely. You should end up with something that looks like the photo below.
All you need to do now, is turn it so the seams are on the inside and fold over the bottom edge to add the rim.
That's it. A simple hat that you can make from one square in any way you like.
